Introduction

The CTLHE course aims to initiate participants into the principles of learning, teaching, assessment and feedback in the HKU context, while also modelling approaches to improving teaching practice.

In the first micro-teaching practice, participants will apply active learning strategies to engage a diverse range of students in small group settings. The course will subsequently guide them in planning improvements in their teaching. With constructive and actionable feedback from TALIC instructors and peers, participants will identify what went well and what needs improvement in their initial micro-teaching practices (Module 3/4). The micro-teaching assessment in Module 7/8 provides opportunities for participants to demonstrate improvement in teaching.

Starting from the academic year 2025-26, a new course assessment will be introduced. Course participants should complete this new assessment within a designated time frame to receive a certificate. (See Assessment and Course Completion Requirements below for details.)

Upon successful completion of the course, research postgraduate students with at least 25 hours of university-level teaching experience are eligible to apply for HKU Advance HE Associate Fellowship (AFHEA).

Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon the completion of CTLHE course, students will be able to:
  1. Design and deliver effective, inclusive, and engaging learning experiences that support students in achieving learning outcomes.
  2. Evaluate student work consistently with academic integrity.
  3. Deliver constructive and actionable feedback that supports student learning.
  4. Apply reflection to enhance teaching and assessment practices for continuous professional development (CPD).

Course Arrangement and Schedule

This is a face-to-face course; no online class will be arranged. Approximately 24 classes, divided into six cohorts, will be offered each academic year. Each class will accommodate up to 24 participants. Check class schedules here.
Participants are expected to actively engage and attend all required modules, which include four workshops and two micro-teaching sessions. Micro-teaching sessions will be scheduled based on arrangement made by TALIC instructors. In general, instructors will confirm the micro-teaching arrangement during Modules 2 and 6. Participants will be assigned to join either micro-teaching session A or B. Participants are strongly advised to ensure they are available in all the eight modules prior to registration. See the course arrangement below:
Modules Duration Topics
Module 1 2 hours Required Workshop: Classroom Activity Design and Facilitation
Module 2 2 hours Required Workshop: Assessment and Evaluation
Module 3 3 hours Micro-teaching practices A *
Module 4 3 hours Micro-teaching practices B *
Module 5 2 hours Required Workshop: Constructive Feedback
Module 6 2 hours Required Workshop: Reflection and Continuous Professional Development
Module 7 3 hours Micro-teaching assessment A *
Module 8 3 hours Micro-teaching assessment B *

* There are four micro-teaching sessions, each lasting three hours. Participants are required to attend only two of the four sessions, during which they will conduct micro-teaching. In general, course instructors will confirm the micro-teaching arrangement during Modules 2 and 6.

Assessment and Course Completion Requirement

Course participants are required to fully attend all required modules, and complete relevant pre-module tasks, two micro-teaching sessions, and a written reflective assignment within a designated time frame.

Attendance and Active Participation

Full attendance and active participation in class are mandatory. Participants must complete all relevant pre-module tasks.

Make-up arrangements will only be considered by TALIC instructors in cases of unavoidable absence (e.g., medical or bereavement leave). If applicable, participants may be asked to attend a make-up class in a later session, subject to availability.

To maintain a structured and effective learning experience, participants who miss the first module or fail to attend two or more modules will not be offered a make-up class. Instead, they will be unenrolled from the course and may re-register with a later cohort.

Micro-Teaching Assessment

Participants are required to conduct two micro-teaching (10 minutes each) on the same topic to demonstrate improvement in fundamental teaching skills. The first will be arranged in Module 3 or 4, and the second in Module 7 or 8, based on the schedule determined by TALIC instructors. Micro-teaching assessment will be graded using pre-defined criteria, including:
  • Learning outcomes
  • Interactivity
  • Preparation, presentation skills and classroom management
  • Alignment
  • Time management
Details of the assessment criteria will be available on the Cert Course Moodle .

Written Reflective Assignment

Start from academic year 2025-26, a new written reflective assignment will be introduced. Participants must reflect on one of the following:

  1. A real teaching session that they conducted in their faculty/department/school (signed off by the teacher responsible for the session), or
  2. The marking/grading of student scripts (signed off by the teacher responsible for the grading).

The written reflection must be submitted within 12 months from the start of the first module. Any special requests (such as submission deadline extensions) will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please note that a maximum extension of six months may be granted.

Detailed instructions for completing the assignment are available in the Guide and Template.

Exemption

Depending on previous teaching experience, exemptions may be granted (for details on criteria for exemption and procedure, please see Guidelines for exemptions).
